The Trust & Safety Africa Academy (TSAA) proudly marked a major milestone this past week, September 13th 2025, with the graduation of its first cohort of Fellows. This brought to an end a journey that began in February 2025 and ended in August 2025. The initial call for applications yielded over 300 entries from over 7 African countries, resulting in 50 initial finalists with 30 making it to the end. The ceremony brought together partners, mentors, industry experts, and supporters to celebrate the accomplishments of the Fellows who successfully completed the intensive program.

The TSAA Fellowship was designed to build Africa’s first pipeline of trained professionals in the field of digital trust and safety; a rapidly growing discipline focused on addressing online harms, safeguarding communities, and creating safer digital ecosystems. In his remarks, Emmanuel Adinkrah, President of GISF, reflected on the journey:

“This fellowship has shown us that when young people are given the right tools and mentorship, they can thrive in shaping safer digital spaces. TSAA is more than a program,it’s a community that we are building for the long term.”

Over the course of the program, Fellows gained practical knowledge, mentorship, and exposure to real-world projects that equipped them with the skills needed to navigate this evolving sector. Andrew Briercliffe, one of the program’s mentors, underscored the promise he sees in the fellows:

“I have been inspired by the curiosity and courage of this cohort. They represent the future of trust and safety, and it is bright.”

A highlight of the ceremony was the keynote address by Sarah Knowles, Global Vice President of Wellbeing at Teleperformance where she highlighted the critical importance of human-centered approaches in this work:

“The work you are stepping into is not just about technology; it’s about protecting humanity. Your well-being, and the well-being of users, must always be at the center. Teleperformance is proud to support initiatives like TSAA that invest in the next generation of digital leaders.”

Her words encouraged the Fellows to see themselves not just as professionals entering a field, but as pioneers shaping the future of online safety in Africa and beyond.

The program also recognized outstanding Fellows, with Ephraim A. Mensah and Toro-Obong Essien honored as Valedictorians for their exceptional contributions, leadership, and commitment throughout the Fellowship. Their remarks reflected the passion and dedication of the entire cohort.

Valedictorian Ephraim A. Mensah shared:

“This program has changed my perspective. I came in eager to learn, and I leave eager to serve.”

His fellow valedictorian, Toro-Obong Essien, added:

“Trust and safety is no longer just a concept for me…it’s a calling.”

Other fellows echoed the transformative nature of the experience. Gloria remarked:

“This fellowship opened doors I never imagined. It gave me clarity on how I can make a real difference in digital safety.”

Toro-Obong further emphasized the depth of the journey:

“The mentorship was invaluable. I now feel equipped to step into this field with confidence.”

Speaking at the ceremony, the TSAA leadership team highlighted the significance of the Fellowship, noting that it not only empowers individuals but also contributes to a wider movement for digital safety across the continent. Special thanks were extended to the mentors, guest speakers, and partner organizations who supported the journey of the Fellows.

The graduation also signalled the beginning of a growing alumni network, with Fellows encouraged to continue their collaboration, advocacy, and professional development in trust and safety roles within Africa and beyond.

As TSAA looks ahead, the Academy will continue to expand its initiatives, strengthen partnerships, and open new opportunities for young professionals across Africa to become leaders in this critical field.

Congratulations to the 2025 TSAA Fellows, the first of many who will shape a safer digital future in Africa and beyond.
